Findley Elementary School
Findley Elementary School is a diverse, medium-sized elementary school. We serve a student population of 544 students. We have previously been an IB Primary Years Programme school, and although we are no longer, our teachers use an inquiry style of teaching in most, if not all subjects.
Students and families we serve come from a variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds, including but not limited to, Japanese, Chinese, Indian, German, Arabic, Israeli and many other Western European countries. There are more than 35 languages spoken. The majority of our English Language Learners are bilingual and are quick to become proficient in English. 6% of our population is identified as having a disability. Less than 5% of our student population qualifies for free and reduced lunch.
Our students typically score well above the state average on the Oregon Statewide Assessment. In 2018-2019 93% of students were proficient on English Language Arts portion of the SBAC and 91% proficient in Math. Individual student progress is rated high. Our median growth percentile in ELA is 66% and 62% in math. Currently, we have 96 students who are identified as TAG. At the beginning of this school year we have only eight students in grades 1 & 2 who meet the district qualifications for intervention.
We have an active and robust parent community that sponsor a variety of programs in our school and raise on average $80,000 or more per year. They sponsor several enrichment programs and events including; Findley Flyers, Passport Club, Art Literacy, Science Fair, Math Olympiad, Fall Festival, Carnival, and the Dragon Dash. The majority of our students have access to a variety of after school programs and enrichment opportunities. Many participate in academic clubs, music programs and/or sports activities. Although, like everywhere else, many of our families have been impacted by the global pandemic.
On a recent Family Survey we sent home asking how Distance Learning was going, of the 46 families who responded, 50% of them indicated that their child feels lonely and misses friends. Over 50% indicated that their child(ren) was doing well with on-line learning.
In Nov. 2020, teachers reported that 91% of our students are fully engaged in online instruction. Fully engaged can be defined as attending all live sessions and completing most, if not all assignments.
Findley is also home to a stable faculty. Our teacher turnover rate is 12% and staff report a strong desire to remain in the building. The average amount of years people have been working at Findley is a little over 8 years.
