The DL Program in Beaverton / El Programa de Doble Inmersión en Beaverton / Beaverton
The Dual Language Program in the Beaverton School District is considered to be two-way immersion (TWI) as defined by the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL). When considering enrollment of new dual language students, the language demographic of the classroom is of utmost importance. In order to be in full alignment with the Guiding Principles of Dual Language Education, the “two-way immersion programs include approximately equal numbers of students who are monolingual or dominant in English at the time of enrollment and students who are monolingual or dominant in the partner language at the time of enrollment. There also may be students who have proficiency in both languages at the time of enrollment. A general rule is that to be considered a two-way program, no less than one third and no more than two thirds of the student population should be monolingual or dominant in either English or the partner language at the time of enrollment.”

Important Note:
*In order to support more students from the DL school boundary, fewer kindergarten spots will be accepted from outside the DL school boundary until the last round of applications.
**In order to preserve the integrity of the two-way dual program model, if one or more of the three student subgroups do not fill after Lottery, the spaces will remain open until filled. With that in mind, it is possible for a school to accept new students into the dual language classrooms through October.
Nota importante:

Lottery Process
A Lottery based on home language is put into place when the number of applicants for the program is more than the number of spaces available. Lottery numbers are used to determine which students are selected within the preference order described below.
In order to ensure alignment with the two-way immersion program model, applicants are placed in student subgroups based on their home language noted on the application. Each student subgroup represents one third of the total number of students in the classroom. Priority is given to students who live within the school boundary.
Example of a Two-way Classroom (Spanish/English)
A classroom with 24 students would have the following language balance:
-
8 in subgroup 1: home language is Spanish
-
8 subgroup 2: home language is English or a language other than Spanish
-
Names will be selected for each language student subgroup until either the spaces are full, OR there are no longer applicants in the student sub group. Once selected, a student’s family has one week to accept or decline the spot by responding through email or in writing.
Note: Preference is given to siblings of students already enrolled in the dual language program. Also, transportation can only be provided to students within the Dual Language school boundary or region.

Transfer Process / Proceso de transferencia /
Process for Intradistrict Transfers
The process for a dual language program intradistrict transfer allows resident students to transfer from one Beaverton school to another Beaverton school.
When a BSD resident student is accepted into the dual language program and lives in a BSD neighborhood that is outside of the dual language school boundary, the dual language application acts as the documentation needed to complete a transfer. Once the family commits to the program and has confirmed with the school site coordinator/administrator, the registrar at the dual language school will begin the process of the dual language program transfer by contacting the registrar at the home school of the student. Once the student is dropped from the home school, the dual language school registrar will add the new student.
The dual language school prioritizes applicants from within the school boundary. Students requesting transfer may fill the remaining spaces, if available. Often transfers are not approved until as late as August of the new school year.
Process for Interdistrict Transfers
The process for an interdistrict transfer allows non-district students to transfer from a non-BSD school to a BSD school.
If a student is interested in attending a dual language program school but lives outside of BSD, they must follow the process for interdistrict transfer prior to applying.
For more information, please visit the BSD Transfers webpage.
